We are not, and the confusion is understandable: Dubai has two very different ways to play virtual reality, and almost nobody explains the difference before you pay. So here it is, from people who run one of the two formats. We operate VR Point, a free-roam VR arena in Al Quoz, so read our take on the other side with that in mind. First, the names: VR Park is now Play DXB
The attraction most people still call “VR Park Dubai” sits inside The Dubai Mall and now operates as Play DXB, run by Emaar Entertainment. It opened as the region’s first virtual reality theme park, and the format is exactly what “theme park” suggests: a large indoor floor of individual VR and AR rides and attractions, from coaster-style seats to shooting games. Travel platforms list around 18 or more rides, and at the time of writing, ticket sites offer pay-and-play passes from roughly AED 186 to 200. You walk in off the mall, load a pass, and hop between short experiences.
A free-roam arena is a different animal. There is no queue of strangers and no menu of two-minute rides. Your group books a private slot, puts on full-body tracking suits, and walks into one shared 100 m² space where up to 5 people play one 25-30 minute mission together. The room itself joins the game: at our arena, wind and heat effects fire in sync with what happens in the headset. It is less “amusement park”, more “your squad inside one long level”.

Choose Play DXB if…
You are already in Dubai Mall, you have mixed company with very different tastes, and you want to graze: a coaster here, a horror room there, a kids’ ride in between. Nobody has to commit to anything longer than a few minutes, and if someone hates VR after one ride, they can go watch the fountain show. For tourists doing Downtown in one day, that convenience is genuinely hard to beat.
Choose a free-roam arena if…
The point of your outing is the group itself. A birthday squad, a team from the office, four friends who grew up on the same games. Free-roam works because everyone is inside the same mission at the same time, covering each other against a zombie horde or hunting each other in PvP, and the memory afterwards is shared rather than “I did a cool ride, what did you do?”. It is also the format where a spectator lounge matters: at our place the rest of the group watches the mission live on screens, which turns waiting into cheering.

The birthday question
People search for “VR Park birthday package” every month, so let us answer it as neutrally as we can. A mall attraction birthday means passes for the kids plus a table booked somewhere in the mall afterwards, which works fine for a casual celebration. A free-roam arena birthday is built the other way around: the venue is yours, squads rotate through missions, and the cake happens in the same lounge where everyone just watched the birthday kid survive a zombie wave on the big screens. Can you do both in one trip?
Honestly, yes, and tourists sometimes do. Play DXB slots naturally into a Dubai Mall afternoon between the aquarium and the fountains. A free-roam mission is its own outing: Al Quoz is 15-20 minutes from Downtown by car, sessions are booked rather than walk-in, and you will want the full hour with briefing and gear. Different days, different moods, zero conflict between them.
